The ADDer vs the Non-ADDer

Non-ADDers can push through lack of stimulation and finish projects; meanwile Adders struggle to focus when there is a lack of interest. They cannot help it, as their mind keeps jumping away. Despite several efforts and really wanting different results, they are not able to push through lack of stimulation. “Pushing through the inability to focus, without the knowledge of specifically-designed ADHD strategies, is like trying to leap over the Grand Canyon,” explains Lee Harbison.

Highly resilient, Adders try numerous times to complete tasks yet instead become frustrated and often feel defeated. If accompanied by pressure to perform, they become overwhelmed, which “shuts down their brain” and makes them either sleepy, impatient, annoyed or distracted. “This is where non-Adders misunderstand the Adder and think they don’t care or are lazy.  When stimulation is not present, ADHD challenges come into play and the ADHD mind automatically transfers to what is stimulating,” Lee Harbison explains. This may also cause unhealthy behaviors such as overeating, overstepping others’ boundaries, temper flares, driving too fast, using drugs, or gambling.

Another difference is that ADHD individuals have a higher degree of cognitive strengths and challenges. Hence the paradox such as: the tendency to procrastinate, lose focus, forget, or become easily overwhelmed.  While, ADDers are quite bright, creative and intuitive with untapped hard-wired strengths. In fact, many are brilliant, gifted.  If a full education was incomplete this in no way reflects their capabilities and high intellectual prowess. Since their talents come so easily to them some do not notice them and think “everyone has them.” In response, they underplay and underutilize these special talents.

What is important to know is that if an ADDer is engaged in an environment they find positive and comfortable, they flourish becoming an invaluable asset. They persistently function under their own pressure trying to fix and be what others expect of them.  Add more outside pressure and this can lead to shutting down. Coaching helps clients understand (not dwell) on their challenges, identify and embrace their personal talents, interests and passions, and integrate customized techniques taken from proven ADHD strategies.  Here is where they gain useful strategies, discover how to sustain attention, inhibit impulsivity, maintain effective personal momentums and build strong business and personal relationships significantly improving their productivity and quality of life.
